Joseph P. Murphy was an American academic and professor of education at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College. He specialized in leadership and organizational theory in education, and authored several influential books and articles on the subject.

Murphy obtained his bachelor's degree from St. Thomas University, a master's degree from The Catholic University of America, and a doctorate from the University of Maryland. He began his academic career at the University of Maine, and later joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, before joining Vanderbilt University in 1993.

Throughout his career, Murphy served as a consultant to numerous educational organizations, including school districts, state departments of education, and professional associations. He was also a prolific author, with over 20 books and more than 150 articles published on various aspects of educational leadership and administration.
